Each question in the MDQ requires a “yes” or “no” answer. The more “yes” answers a person has, the more likely they may be symptomatic of having a mood disorder.

Interpreting My Score

Totaling up your score for the MDQ will help give you an idea of what’s going on. However, don’t rely on just a self-diagnosis. Discuss your results with your doctor or a mental health counselor. Types of Mood Disorders

There are several types of mood disorders, which is one reason it’s important to receive an official diagnosis from an expert. The types of mood disorders include:

  • Dysthymia
  • Cyclothymic Disorder
  • Postpartum Depression
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder
  • Substance-Induced Depression

Each type of mood disorder has its own list of symptoms, but many overlap and occur with two or more types.

Causes of Mood Disorders

Anyone with a mood disorder will wonder why they have one. For many, the cause can be related to genetics. In fact, a history of mental illness in a family increases the likelihood that an individual may develop their own. Other factors and events that may contribute to someone developing a mood disorder include experiencing abuse or neglect, including going back to childhood. It can also happen to people who endure one or more traumatic events. Finally, abuse of substances like alcohol or drugs can contribute to developing a mood disorder.

How Are Mood Disorders Diagnosed?

While the Mood Disorder Questionaire + Quiz is a good jumping-off point, anyone who takes it will need to receive an official diagnosis. Their physician or a mental health clinician can provide an assessment that will determine if they have a mood disorder. The doctor or counselor will ask about the number and severity of the symptoms and how long they have been going on. They can also discuss any family history of mental illness and rule out physical causes of the symptoms.

How Are Mood Disorders Treated?

Different types of therapy provide different strengths for a person who has a mood disorder. The goal is to help minimize their symptoms and help them feel more in control. Some common therapies used to treat mood disorders include:

  • Individual therapy: One-on-one sessions with a therapist form the basis of treatment.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This teaches people to connect how they feel and think to their resulting actions and make any necessary changes.
  • Holistic Therapy: This approach heals a person’s mind, body, and spirit simultaneously.
  • Group Therapy: The therapist leads a small group of people in discussions about how their mood disorders express themselves and how to minimize the symptoms.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy: The therapists provides directions related to eye movements or in response to tapping motions while the individual discusses traumatic events from their past. This helps them reprocess them in a healthy way.
