What is Individual Psychotherapy?

Individual psychotherapy provides a safe setting in which clients can identify and address their emotional and mental health struggles with the guidance and care of a skilled therapist. By participating in private sessions, individuals are able to delve deeper into their thoughts and past experiences than they may feel comfortable doing in group therapy.

Furthermore, this one-on-one attention helps clients foster confidence, build trust, gain clarity, enhance emotional regulation, learn valuable coping skills, and, ultimately, make positive changes in their thought patterns and behaviors. Overall, this ongoing process allows clients to overcome mental health challenges with improved emotional stability and self-awareness, so that they can have a healthier relationship with themselves and with others.

Individual therapy can be helpful to those struggling with the following conditions:

Types of Psychotherapy We Provide

We offer several types of psychotherapy, each aimed at addressing the underlying factors contributing to a person’s condition while encouraging long-term personal development. No matter what an individual is struggling with, our compassionate therapists are here to help.

Highlighted below are the types of psychotherapy offered at our Philadelphia facility:

  • Mental Health Counseling: Individual therapy can help those facing a wide range of mental health disorders. Clients work closely with their therapist to build trust and a sense of security as they discuss the root causes of their condition and how it impacts their daily life. They then work together to find practical solutions and strategies for reducing symptoms, managing stress, and strengthening emotional stability.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based strategy that centers on replacing negative thought patterns and behaviors with more constructive ways of thinking and healthier habits.
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT): A type of cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) focuses on acceptance and change. Furthermore, this approach emphasizes the therapeutic relationship between the client and the mental health provider.

What To Expect In An Individual Psychotherapy Session?

During an individual psychotherapy session, individuals can expect to work one-on-one with a licensed therapist who will help address their exact needs while setting achievable goals and building a strong therapeutic bond.

Sessions may vary by a person’s specific situation and position in treatment, but overall, clients can expect the following from our individual psychotherapy in Philadelphia:

  • Fostering Trust: During the early stages of individual therapy, therapists will work on building a solid and supportive foundation with their client. This involves gaining deeper insight into the individual’s history, hardships, and goals.
  • Developing a Personalized Care Plan: After gaining more insight, the therapist and client will work collaboratively to create a treatment plan tailored to the client’s unique needs. This includes establishing clear steps and objectives towards progress.
  • Applying Therapeutic Strategies: Clients will then participate in individual therapies such as CBT, DBT, and mental health counseling. This may also include exercises or tasks for clients to complete outside of treatment.
  • Confidentiality: Clients can rest assured that each individual session adheres to the privacy guarantee of HIPAA regulations. As a result, individuals can feel safe and secure knowing they can share in a private setting.

Our Programs That Offer Psychotherapy in Philadelphia

We integrate individual psychotherapy as a primary component of each of our outpatient treatment programs. By offering different levels of programming, we are able to meet our clients’ precise needs throughout each stage of recovery. While in each of the programs below, participants are able to live in their own home environment.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Our highest level of care, our partial hospitalization program (PHP), provides clients with unwavering support and necessary structure. Individuals attend sessions five days a week, starting in the morning and ending in the late afternoon. One-on-one therapy sessions are utilized during this stage of recovery to craft a stable foundation for ongoing progress.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) offers more freedom than a PHP while still providing a more structured schedule than a traditional outpatient program. Clients typically attend treatment between three and five days a week, with sessions lasting for a few hours at a time. While in an IOP, individual therapy sessions reinforce progress and continue helping clients work towards their recovery goals.

Outpatient Program (OP)

Our outpatient program (OP) is intended to help clients assimilate back into their routines without compromising their position in treatment. Participants attend weekly sessions and consistent check-ins. This helps individuals to continue making progress while applying the skills gained in treatment to real world scenarios.

How Often Will I Meet With My Therapist?

Those participating in our individual psychotherapy in Philadelphia can expect to meet with their therapist once per week. This consistent schedule allows clients to build rapport with their therapist, reflect on their experiences, and apply new strategies in real time. Regular sessions also create opportunities to monitor progress and navigate challenges as they arise.
