Begin Mental Health Treatment in Philadelphia Today

We believe that recovery from mental illness is not only attainable, but sustainable.

Starting mental health treatment can feel like a big step. Some people feel a bit of concern about opening up to a therapist, others may just be apprehensive about the unknown. The good news is that your first mental health appointment is designed to take all of that into account.

At New Mind Wellness Center, your first visit to our outpatient mental health program in Pennsylvania is focused on understanding your needs, helping you feel comfortable, and creating a clear plan for moving forward one step at a time.

Before You Arrive: Preparing for Your First Mental Health Treatment Visit

Before your first mental health appointment at New Mind, we’ll ask you  for some preliminary information. We often complete this first step over the phone, for your convenience.

Some of the information we’ll ask for may include:

  • Insurance and contact information
  • Medical and mental health history
  • Current symptoms or concerns

Handling these details ahead of time helps your first visit feel more focused and less rushed. It also enables us to ensure that New Mine Wellness Center is a good fit for you and prepare for your first therapy appointment

You don’t need to prepare perfectly. Just showing up is enough.

Step 1: Check-In and Getting Settled

When you arrive, whether you are in our partial hospitalization program, intensive outpatient program, or standard outpatient therapy, the process is similar to a typical healthcare visit.

You’ll check in, confirm any remaining paperwork, and spend a few moments getting settled before treatment begins.

Step 2: Your Initial Assessment

Your first appointment usually includes a comprehensive mental health assessment, sometimes called an intake.

This is one of the most important parts of the process.

During this time, your provider will:

  • Ask more about what brought you to treatment
  • Review your mental health history
  • Discuss current symptoms and challenges
  • Explore any previous treatment experiences
  • Talk through your goals

The idea is to help our clinicians gain a clear, detailed understanding of what’s troubling you, be it anxiety, depression or a set of symptoms that have not yet led to a formal diagnosis. We use what we learn to begin developing an individualized mental health treatment plan for you.

This is not a test, so you can share at your own pace.

Step 3: What Your First Therapy Session Feels Like

After the initial assessment, your provider will begin to guide the conversation toward your experiences and what you’re hoping to work on.

Your first therapy session often focuses on:

  • Getting to know your therapist
  • Building trust and comfort
  • Talking about your goals
  • Understanding how therapy will work

Most first sessions are about connection and orientation rather than problem solving.

It’s okay if you’re unsure what to say; your therapist will help guide the conversation.

Step 4: What to Expect in a Group Therapy Setting

If your program includes group therapy (which often happens in IOPs or PHPs), you may also be introduced to a group setting early in treatment.

Group sessions typically involve:

  • A small group of individuals with similar experiences
  • A therapist or counselor guiding discussion
  • Conversations focused on coping skills, recovery, or shared challenges

Group therapy is designed to help you feel less lonely and to learn from others while building support and accountability.

You are never required to share more than you feel comfortable with.

Step 5: Understanding Your Mental Health Treatment Plan

By the end of your first appointment, your care team will begin outlining a plan based on your needs.

This mental health treatment plan may include:

  • Recommended level of care (outpatient, IOP, or PHP)
  • Suggested therapy approaches
  • Frequency of sessions
  • Any psychiatric or medication support

We will walk you through these care recommendations and answer any questions you have.

This step helps turn your first visit into a clear, actionable path forward.

What Your First Day of Outpatient Mental Health Treatment May Look Like

If you begin a structured program like IOP or PHP, your first full day is designed to ease you into the process.

You can expect:

  • A clear schedule for the day
  • Introductions to your care team
  • Orientation to the program structure
  • Participation in therapy sessions
  • Breaks and time to adjust

Outpatient treatment programs are structured but supportive. You are not expected to have everything figured out on day one.

What You’re Expected to Do in a Mental Health Program

One of the most common concerns is: What’s expected of me?

In reality, expectations are simple.

You are encouraged to:

  • Show up consistently
  • Be open and honest at your own pace
  • Participate as much as you feel comfortable

You are not expected to:

  • Share everything right away
  • Have all the answers
  • Feel better after the first session

Therapy is a process, and your first appointment is just the beginning.

Know That Feeling Nervous Is Normal

Many people feel anxious before their first appointment, and even during it.

You might feel unsure, emotional, or even a little overwhelmed. That’s completely normal. First sessions are about building a foundation, not fixing everything at once.

Over time, as you become more familiar with the process, it often begins to feel more comfortable and natural.

Taking the first step toward mental health treatment is a meaningful decision, and one you don’t have to navigate alone.
